Borrowing Books

Borrowing

MVSU faculty, staff and students must present their MVSU ID card each time they borrow materials from the library. No faculty, staff or student will be allowed to check-out or borrow library resources without their MVSU ID. Students at the Greenville Higher Education Center (GHEC) must contact the Circulation desk (662-254-3500) or the Instructional Services Librarian (662-254-3494) at the main campus to borrow materials. Public patrons and students from other schools may request circulating materials through their home institution's interlibrary loan office. For further information on interlibrary loan see the ILL tab.

How Long May I Keep It?

Most books in the collection circulate for 3 weeks or 21 days. Undergraduate students are allowed up to 5 circulating items at one check-out period. Graduate students are allowed up to 10 circulating items at one check-out period.

Reserve books, journals and photocopied course materials also circulate inside the library for 2 hours. Audiovisual items (videos and dvds) circulate for 24 hours.

What to do if....

The Book I Need Is Checked Out to Another Patron

Except for reserve material, a hold may be placed on any item that is checked out to another patron by clicking on the Place Hold button in the library's card catalog. Although placing a hold doesn't normally shorten the original loan period for the current borrower, that person will be prevented from renewing the item. Once the book is returned, the requestor is notified by phone or email that the item is being held for them at the circulation desk. Material on hold that is not picked up within 48 hours will be re-shelved.

Help! I Can't Find a Book

If the catalog indicates that an item is "available," but it cannot be found on the shelf, visit the circulation desk for help.  A staff member will be happy to help you look.  If the book still isn't found, a library staff member will continue to search for the book for approximately one week. If the book is found, a circulation staff member will notify you.

If I  lost or It Was Stolen Library Item (Books and Videos)

The cost of a lost book or video is the replacement cost of the book or video; plus a $25.00 non-refundable reprocessing fee; and the current ine on the book (s) or video (s).

Books or videos lost as a result of flooding, fire or theft must be reported within thirty (30) days and an official copy of the insurance, policy and fire report must be forwarded to the Director of Library Services office.

Books or videos returned damaged through negligence will be treated as lost items and are subject to the replacement cost of the item plus the $25.00 non-refundable reprocessing fee and any current fine.

If a student shall return a book that has been considered lost and paid, he/she will be refunded the cost of the book only minus the $18.00 maximum fine amount.

Overdue Books & Late Fees

Are My Books Overdue?

The library notifies borrowers of overdue items within one day (1st notice) and 7 days (2nd notice) of the due date. Items are billed after being overdue for 14 days. Overdue notices and bills are sent via email.

Click on my Account tab on Herbie card catalog to access your patron record, see what material you have checked out and when it is due, renew items, and see whether you owe any fines and what titles you have placed on hold. Enter your MVSU Id number and a 4 digit pin number then click on the "LogIn" button.

Grace Period

There is a 3 day grace period when non-reserve late items may be returned without owing any fines. Books returned after the grace period has ended will be subject to fines accrued from the date the book was due.

Late Fees & Replacement Charges

Late fines are charged to encourage fair and efficient use of library materials and to provide the best service to all library patrons. Overdue fines are 20¢ per day per book or, for reserve material, $1.00 per hour. With a maximum fine amount of $18.00. The default cost of a lost or damaged book is the cost of the book with a processing fee of $25.00. Fines and replacement charges must be paid by in the library (cash only) or at the cashier's window (cash, check or money order) by the end of each semester or a university-wide hold will be placed on your account.
